My Students

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies . . . The man who never reads lives only one.” – George R.R. Martin

Our students live in rural Nebraska where the vast majority of the population is white and is classified as middle class.

Most of their interactions with cultural diversity is through social media or television shows, and the occasional trip to Lincoln or Omaha. Many are not able to empathize with those who are different than they are. This is not because they aren't good human beings, it's because they haven't read books that help them walk in someone else's shoes. The students who are readers are worldly without ever having left the state of Nebraska.

My Project

The English teachers created The Breakfast Book Club to foster an environment of authentic and engaged readers. The books were chosen based on the area's demographics and selected by the students themselves.

These book sets will provide students an opportunity to read about characters whose lives may be different than or similar to their own.

Most of these students are in the throes of a busy academic and extracurricular life, and don't set aside the time to read for fun. The Breakfast Book Club will be in a non-academic setting - held before school. Each week students will discuss their connections, questions, and ideas based on the pages assigned. The intention is to help students become stronger readers by providing a low stress environment to explore their own understandings of the book.
