Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Providing 80 8th-grade students with a class set of "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" can serve as a catalyst for an enriching and impactful learning experience.

By immersing students in the inspiring story of William Kamkwamba's journey in Malawi, the book fosters a deep understanding of social justice, resource scarcity, and the critical importance of sustainable energy solutions.

Reading about William's determination to overcome challenges and harness wind power not only captivates their imagination but also sparks a genuine interest in the broader issues faced by communities in West Africa.

In active learning environment, students will move beyond theoretical knowledge. After reading the book, the students will engage in hands-on activities to construct their own wind turbines. This practical application allows them to comprehend the complexities involved in renewable energy generation and appreciate the potential for positive change.

The uniqueness of this project lies in the students' commitment to taking direct action. In addition to building wind turbines, they will collaborate on constructing solar suitcases designed to provide midwives and doctors the ability to provide medical care to mothers and infants in regions in West Africa, echoing the book's setting. This practical, real-world application connects the students emotionally to the narrative and empowers them to make a tangible impact on the lives of others.

Through this interdisciplinary approach, students not only develop a holistic understanding of social justice and resource scarcity but also acquire essential skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The project encourages creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving, laying the foundation for a lifelong appreciation of sustainable practices.
