My students walk into the classroom with a lot of the skills however, they are terrified to use them in front of others. They struggle mightily with reading, but more because their interest in academics isn't there. They learn a whole lot through "head-fake" learning. They might tell you they didn't learn anything, but when you ask them questions, there is a whole lot more than they can recall. They told you they didn't know it because it didn't feel like learning to them. My students surprise me every day.
I want to introduce them to educational, fun texts so that they can enjoy school.
Most of my 7th grade students are on 3rd grade reading levels. There is a lot of missing motivation from themselves and sometimes at home. If they felt education was fun, they would learn more.
My Project
As of right now, my students are beginning our classes by reading a book pulled from a lot of books in my personal library that I took to school. While some of them are finding favorites in Stephen King and Dan Brown, I really wish I could focus this time to make it more meaningful. This introduces the book I'm asking for "The Left Behinds: The iPhone that Saved George Washington." I don't want the book to help us learn about the time period, I want enough books that we can all talk about the facts and fiction. I want them to enjoy reading something that is on topic and can enhance what we're already learning. If everyone had their own copy to start class, more people would be able to contribute to the class discussion.
