This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
High school has its high's and low's, the "have's" and the "have not's" as life does I suppose. Unfortunately for my students, disappointments come more often than rewards.
However they have a resilience that keeps coming back year after year to the classroom.
Every year, the students resist less and less because of the stories they have heard of strangers who help my classroom procure books. I hope, with a little bit of luck this can continue. I can feel something special happening with their learning.
My Project
Having the students have their own copy of this book is significant. They always have to share. This time, especially with the themes in this book, why not allow them to have their own book.
Having their own novel to embrace and annotate allows them to capture their thoughts about what they are reading WHILE THEY READ.
It's an experience they can never duplicate during a second read. It's a memory they can forever return to. It's a skill that will ground them for college and more.
Having these books will unlock something special for my students to remember and tell their own families.
