My students need a classroom library and reading supplies to participate in my annual BIG READ where students are inspired to become readers and analyze texts for a deeper knowledge of literary ideas that connect them.
My school serves students from a rural community with a diverse background of needs. Their life experiences might include daily chores from the family farm or struggles against local gang members. This is a factory town where students will have opportunities to work at several different factories, middle management positions, or within agriculture. Despite the challenges of a low SES environment, my students remain optimistic and deserve to have interesting and updated reading materials that will propel them into great thinkers and responsible citizens.
My Project
Students choose a book from the classroom library that will inspire and motivate. They participate in literature circles and Socratic seminars that lead to the culminating book talk and presentation that inspires their peers to continue reading to become lifelong learners! The project challenges students to analyze literary texts and prepares them for college-level reading expectations. The novels also connect my students to each other, their home community, and the broader scheme of this world. They connect through ideas and emotions that help define who they are as people. They have the chance to live vicariously by opening themselves up to new thoughts and experiences.
