My Students

Do you remember reading your first chapter book? Our third grade students have worked all year on their reading skills and are ready to start reading chapter books. We would like to reward their hard work and study a novel. We selected The BFG for its age appropriate content and quality of writing.

Our three classes of third grade students attend a K-6 elementary school in Kansas City, MO.

They live in a high-poverty area where almost 90% of students in the school district receive free or reduced priced lunch. Many families are unable to fill their home bookshelves with high-quality reading material. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and there are over 10 languages spoken among our three classes.

My Project

The textbook provided by the curriculum is not enough; my students need a variety of materials to help them succeed! We are requesting 3 classroom sets of the book The BFG to complete a novel study unit. For many of our students, this will be their first experience studying a chapter book. Each student would have their own copy of the book and therefore be able to take notes while reading and working on comprehension strategies.

In our current reading class, students read stories from a textbook and do not have the chance to interact with real books.

In order to become lifelong readers, students need to be comfortable and familiar with reading quality chapter books.
