Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Everyday, as I work in the four walls of my classroom, I am constantly reminded that I chose the correct career path. My students are eager to learn, and all ears (most of the time). Most of my students come from a bilingual background, and their primary language spoken at home is Spanish. The parents respect education, and always make me feel supported when there is a behavior issue. However, reading support is difficult, as most parents cannot read or write in the English Language.
My students tend to struggle with reading, and we work hard together to get to a third grade reading level.
My main goal as a reading teacher is not only to teach my students to read and comprehend, but to also show them that the world is so much bigger. That possibilities are endless, and adventures are free, when they can learn to sincerely LOVE READING.
My Project
Last year, I went through pair after pair of (cheap) headphones, in my computer center. My students need their online reading practice to bring them up to level. By purchasing 10 pairs of high quality headphones, my students will be better engaged in their on-line learning. My students tend to enjoy their iReady time, and always eager to take their turn at the computer center.
A frequent complaint from my students was, "I can't hear the program!" and the cause would vary from broken headphones, only one earphone working... Interrupted computer time, is learning lost, and teaching lost, as I have to stop my teaching activity or small group to try to "fix" the issue.
