Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My classroom is an self-contained, Autistic Impaired classroom in Detroit, Michigan. I teach seven male students with autism. All of my students are either limited verbal or non-verbal. My students deserve the best! Our district has been going through some financial troubles for the last several years, so it isn't always easy to get the resources that I need in order to help my students learn. I hope being a part of Donors Choose can help us and help my students grow!

My Project

Often my students struggle with sensory needs. It is my goal to create an area outside of the classroom for students to visit if they are struggling with sensory issues within the classroom.

Within the sensory room I would like the lighting to be soothing as well as an area for comfortable sitting for my students.

The sensory room will allow my students a place to go to calm down when the regular classroom setting is to overwhelming for them to function in.

Students will feel safe in the sensory room while they enjoy looking at soothing lamps and cuddling in a comfortable bean bag chair.
