I love coming to school everyday. When I see the smiley faces of my 23 students in the morning , it energizes me. I teach in an urban Title 1 school where 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. My ESL/Inclusion classroom is diverse, and it is made up of 10 children who have an IEP, 4 who have English as their second language, and 9 who are considered mainstream. However, as diverse, unique and special these children are as individuals , we have a motto that unifies us as one and it is, "knowledge is power...our superhero power."
My big focus this year has been creating a wonderful blended learning classroom environment, where students feel empowered to learn, move, collaborate and discover.
My Project
My students need wobble chairs, sensory cushions and chair bands to help with their focus. In the 21st century, flexible seating is very important for so many of our young learners . During station rotation and independent work, my students are given the flexibility of moving to different places around the room. Their reasons vary from seeking a comfortable spot, to locating a space that is least distracting to them, and sometimes they just want to get up and stretch their legs out on the rug with a clipboard.
When students are given options of choice and flexibility , they become more engaged in their tasks and are less disruptive to their peers.
The items that I have chosen will provide additional options for the students to make more effective learning choices. Some children have such an insatiable need for sensory that they want to sit in my teacher chair and spin. The wobble chairs and sensory cushions will provide them with just the right amount of movement that will keep them on task, and minimize the disruptions to the other learners.
