This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a Restorative Practice Coach, each of the students at Woodland West is my students. These students come from a variety of backgrounds and needs. A large amount comes from broken homes and has emotional needs that keep them from achieving their academic goals. There are times when students come to school after witnessing things in their home life that they do not understand and don't know how to handle it. This makes them act out in certain ways that are negative to the school environment. It is my job to help them understand what is going on. To guide them in opening up to what the real issues are and then the proper way to handle it.
Each and every student deserves to feel loved and understood.
They are the future and need to be guided. Some of these children feel they don't matter because they have been told so. They need to know they are responsible for what they want out of life and that they can accomplish whatever it might be.
My Project
Being a Restorative Practice Coach, I deal with so many different issues are students are facing. There are many times a situation may arise and its difficult to explain it on a child's level. Having these resources to start a library is much needed. The students would have a place to sit and read about what they may be facing. These books will help portray it on their level. It would be amazing for me to sit and read with them and discuss how the characters in the book could help them to understand and deal with their feelings.
I want to be able to reach the students in their time of need.
They need to know that I am here and I care. Literature is a way of expression and can open so many eyes. Even if they cant read. Having the time to listen is all they need.
