I have the opportunity to explore science with a variety of students from different cultures - with varying degrees of academic abilities from Kindergarten - fifth grade. I would like them to learn to use the tools that scientist's use to pass the science examination.
My science classroom is filled with students ranging from K-5 five days a week every forty five minutes.
My students are eager to learn science. They come from varied backgrounds and some speak English as a second language.
Most of the student population of my school are eligible for free lunch, located in the center of a large city in New York. Some are living in shelters while others have stable homes with working parents.
We are currently being introduced to the tools that scientist's use to study the world around us.
I would like to provide them with - your help of course- the capability of using this hand lens and graduated cylinder for the classroom and in the home for outdoor use in parks and other places that may find an interest.
My Project
Students will use the graduated cylinder in the classroom to practice measuring the differing volumes or levels of water up to 100 milliliters and logging them into their science journals along with pictures. After complete mastery of this particular part of their beginning journey into the world of science - they will place an irregular solid item in the liquid and determine using- mathematical skills- what the object placed into the liquid weighs.
I'm starting out with volumes because this is one area that the students need to practice to accomplish total success on their examinations in the spring of this year.
I am also introducing to some of the students and reviewing for other students the use of a hand lens through which they will be able to depict the small details of small objects like a leaf, or a rock - draw them and write down how they look before using the lens and how they look after using the lens. Will they see better ?
If you decide to fund this project for my students it will allow me the opportunity to give the student a hand lens and a graduated cylinder to take home and practice using them.
They will be able to extend their homework assignments with and around the things they see outside of school in a familiar place, such as the park or shopping center they may travel to.
Most importantly they will pass their science examination with successful results.
Thank you on behalf of myself and the students!
