The Beat Is The Boss

My classroom consists of 30 high school band students who have accomplished a lot in competitions, but due to district constraints have limited funding.

The band program is being rebuilt after having been completely eliminated a few years ago. Due to district budget concerns, resources for the band class are very limited. My students often do not have the basic materials necessary for a well rounded music education. While I have been providing my own materials for their usage, my equipment has become very worn, establishing the need for the school to have it's own materials.

My students need a metronome for large ensemble rehearsals, student lead sectionals and private lessons to better enable them the understand the concept of "beat" and how to play in time with each other and by themselves. Most of my students have never had the opportunity to use a metronome and have very little sense of playing in time.

By giving my students a metronome, they will have the opportunity to practice with a metronome and develop a good sense of pulse - one the the core topics of learning music. This will also give them a sense of confidence in running their own rehearsals and teaching others rhythms in their music. The metronome will be an asset that will be used on a daily basis, having a huge impact on student learning.
