Help me give my students twenty books so they can compete in the Battle of the Books. I need the books so students can read collectively and win the competition.
I have fifteen students who will participate in the Battle of the Books program. This program is sponsored by the Chicago Public Schools' Department of Libraries. This program encourages teachers to enhance students' knowledge of new titles, authors, illustrators and a variety of literary genres. The Battle of the Books will encourage students to see reading as both a learning and social activity by inspiring both non-readers and readers to have book discussions with children at various grade levels. Further, the discussions are differentiated based on student interest and through exposing students to students with different reading levels.
My Project
This project involves providing 23 books for students who are eager to participate in Battle of the Books program, an after school program at our school. The Elementary Battle of the Books is a reading motivation program for students in grades 4-8 sponsored the Chicago Public Schools' Department of Libraries.
Students will practice reading with their peers while their teachers enhance students' knowledge of a variety of literary genres and elements of fiction such as characterization, author's purpose and plot analysis.
Each year, the students compete in an annual competition between teams of students who worked together reading titles of pre-selected books from a book list compiled by the Department of Libraries. During the competition, students are asked higher-order questions about the books they have read with their team. This project will prepare students for this competition through engaging student participants in several collective discussions rich in literature, thus exposing students to diverse perspectives important for the development of fifth-sixth grade topics.
