My students need books to compete in the Oregon Battle of the Books. Because we are a low-income school, our students rely on our library to be able to check out the books on the list.
Our school is located in SE Portland and has a very diverse student population. About eleven different languages are spoken by our families. We are one of the most diverse schools in our district. Because of our mindfulness curriculum, our students are learning how to regulate themselves so that they are more mindful with each other and are better able to relax and focus. When you come to our school, you can see kindness being spread throughout the halls as our students interact with each other.
We are also a Title I school with many low-income families.
Our school gets some funding for being a Title I school but is still lacking in all of the resources we need in order to make our school even better. Our students could highly benefit from receiving these resources so that they can better develop their critical and higher level thinking skills.
My Project
Reading can make all the difference in a child's life. For the 2018-2019 school year, our school will be participating in the Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB). OBOB is a friendly reading competition that promotes reading and comprehension skills. The battles consist of two teams competing against each other answering "in which book" and "content" questions about the sixteen books on the list.
Having access to the OBOB books at out school library will better help promote reading in our school The students would greatly appreciate having access to the books at their school as they might not be able to afford to buy them.
