Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the math coach at a diverse inner-city school in Danbury, Connecticut. Every student in Danbury receives free lunch due to our high population of lower-income students. Approximately,
55 % of our students are second language learners.
Most of our students walk to school. is surrounded by condominiums and small neighborhood communities. The playground and fields behind our school are always occupied by neighborhood children and their families playing soccer and football. We have a beautiful community garden that is maintained by neighborhood families. PAES has monthly "family meetings" where we celebrate our students who have Power Manners and our students who have "Paper of the Month." Our students are kind and caring and can often be caught stopping in the hallway and saying, "Good morning", "How is your day?" or stopping to allow someone to pass and say, "After you."
Because so many of our students are from immigrant families they all understand the plight of one another or others who have sacrificed more than them. They help one another in more ways than just translating for each other. They help our newcomers become part of the PAES Family.
My Project
Our district is doing our best to make Distance Learning attainable for all students. We are trying to make the process equitable for all students. Equity, however, is not easy to attain. We are creating lessons, incorporating differentiation, attaching videos, suggesting high-quality games, recording read alouds, and so much more. However, our concern is that students do not have the basic materials necessary to do the assignments. We would like to put paper and crayons into the homes of as many students as possible. This will let them know that we have not forgotten about them and we always want them to do their best.
