Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is an urban public school located in Providence, RI. We are in a high needs district with over 91% of our students receiving free and reduced-price lunch. Over 60% of our children speak more than one language and are learning English. We want to support our diverse student body by providing them rich instruction in a caring environment.
This year our students were thrilled to be chosen to participate in the Disney Musicals in Schools grant to help build a sustainable theater program in our school.
There are many benefits that come along with this program, one of them being the opportunity to perform The Jungle Book at a local theater in front of friends and family. The musical will help them build their confidence, develop their language skills, and bring together our community.
This is an incredible opportunity for our students that will expose them to the performing and visual arts in new and exciting ways. Students have already expressed excitement about collaborating to create a large mural-like set.
My Project
This project will help bring to life the characters, props, and set for our production of The Jungle Book! The set and costume design serves as a wonderful way to get all of our students engaged. Students who are too young to perform or who might not want to be in the spotlight can still participate in painting the set and creating props.
Using paints, paper, and craft materials we will turn our school’s gymnasium into the set of The Jungle Book.
Students will work together to create a painted jungle backdrop dense with trees, vines, and underbrush. Additional props of vines, leaves, and flowers will also be created.
Making a large set is a multi-step, larger-scale project that gives students with a particular interest in arts the ability to collaborate on a larger piece in a way that could not be done during class time. This will get students engaged and invested in building the theater program at our school.
When the set and costumes are complete, students will have the opportunity to perform for friends and family both at our school and at Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC). With your generosity, we can begin to fill our school with materials that will help build our community and a love of musical theater.
