Mrs. Mead from Yonkers NY is requesting a class trip through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
We need help covering the cost of tickets to the musical "The Band's Visit" on Broadway.
I work at a special education school, serving emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, and other special education classified students. Our students come from low socio-economic backgrounds in New York City. Over 95% of the student body is eligible for free lunch, and more than 90% receive public assistance.
I have a self-contained classroom, which educates students with specialized learning needs. During classroom lessons, my students learn the basics of math, English, science, and social studies. They only venture out of my classroom for their elective courses and lunch, so the majority of their studies are done in my room alone.
My students are interested in seeing the musical "The Band's Visit" on Broadway. The storyline follows an Egyptian Police band. After a mix-up at the border, the band is sent to a remote Israeli village. With no bus until morning and no hotel in sight, these unlikely travelers are taken in by the locals. Under the spell of the desert sky, their lives become intertwined in the most unexpected ways. This is a story about acceptance and what it means to be a loving human being.
As their teacher, I'm a huge advocate of experiential learning. Many of our best lessons have happened during field trips. It gives us a chance to explore classroom themes on a grander scale, while simultaneously honing my students' social and emotional skills in a public setting.
My name is Kadesha and I would love to see "The Band's Visit" with my friends. Ms. F encouraged us to find a Broadway show with an uplifting message, and this one seems to fit the bill. I hope to learn more about performance art, and also just have fun with my friends on a field trip.
I will do anything and everything possible to bring this project to life. I researched the cost of the tickets, and now I'm writing this essay to support the request. I am happy to lead this project because it stems from my personal interest. Instead of being told what to do and where to go, I actually have the chance to decide where to visit on a field trip.
Most students at our school can't afford field trips without assistance. We live in group homes, shelters, low-income housing, and foster homes, so it's impossible to do this on our own. Thanks for viewing our proposal and considering a donation for our Broadway trip. We appreciate all the support we can get!
