Prep Time: 2 hours after school every other week.
Ingredients: food items, pots and pans, measurements, conversion equations, and students with high interest in math and cooking.
Combine all ingredients to create the Baker's Dozen after-school cooking club!
Bake Time: one school year.
Yields: 26 happy students.
As a math teacher, I find it necessary to incorporate real-life experiences into learning. The Baker's Dozen cooking club will offer 26 students (13 first semester, 13 second semester) the opportunity to work on measurement skills while learning the basics of cooking. In addition to learning basic skills of cooking, students will be able to practice their measurement skills and conversions between the customary and metric systems. The students will keep a running log of cooking basics and math applications in the kitchen. Understanding how to measure and convert equations as well as knowing how to increase or decrease recipe amounts is very important in the real world.
Cyril B. Busbee Creative Arts Academy opened the 2005-2006 school year as an arts integrated school. Being in a brand new building we have access to a kitchen that needs to be used. Approximately seventy percent of the students qualify for free and reduced lunch. I feel it is necessary to involve students in activities both during school and after school that promote learning. The after school program would help to promote interest in students that typically would not excel in a regular math classroom.
The Baker's Dozen cooking club will need many kitchen supplies in order to get started. Pots, pans, bake ware, mixing bowls, and cooking utensils will be needed. The students will use the kitchen items each time the club meets in order to become familiar with the basics of the kitchen.
The Baker's Dozen will be an exciting new club that will reach out to students whose interest is not necessarily focused on academics in the classroom. The goal of the Baker's Dozen club is to help motivate students in math through the use of the kitchen.
We would be very grateful to anyone who could help us get this project started at the beginning of the 2006-2007 school year.
Thank you for helping make our students successful!
