My students need oil paint in order to experience many types of paint in their Honors Painting class and to learn more about classical modes of painting.
Help my students "paint like the masters" as they indulge their how-to questions and curiosity by using oil paint as a medium. My painting class is an elective funded by student fees, and we are struggling to purchase enough paint for the entire year, let alone something special like oil paint.
Our school is an extremely diverse school full of hard-working students who often travel more than two hours each day to get to school.
The students at my school come from neighborhoods across the city, and most of my students come from low-income homes where they cannot afford art materials or art classes. My students are eager to learn the craft of painting, and they are taking this Honors Painting class as an elective. Their choice to be in this class means they are dedicated to the arts and they take their work seriously. They are extremely focused, creative and brimming with ideas. They want to create work that will be showcased in our school and bring color to the blank walls.
My Project
Thus far in their painting class, my students have been using cheap acrylic paint to approach many subjects such as still life, portraits and landscapes. By having the opportunity to try oil paint, my students will learn the differences in approach and technique between acrylic and oils. My students will be able to create works of art that reference the styles and processes of "master" painters such as Rembrandt and Sargent. They will learn more about traditional oil painting techniques, artists and tools. They will have the opportunity to create an expressive painting of a subject of their choosing, using high quality non-toxic oil paints. This exposure will give them some basis to decide whether oil painting is something they wish to pursue in college or other arenas.
Please broaden the experience I can offer with my students and help them understand another world of painting.
This oil paint will allow my painting students the chance to compare and contrast painting materials, to connect with and understand artists and historical techniques, and to make personal choices about which materials they will choose as a vehicle for expression in the future.
