Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Art is not what you see, but what you make others see." -Edgar Degas
My third grade students are typical 8 and 9-year-olds who love to learn through observation skills. Great writers are also great observers. They consider the world around them, notice overlooked details, and make connections.
My third grade classroom consists of 22 diverse learners.
Our Title I campus is made up of over 600 students. A high percentage of the students on our campus receive free or reduced cost lunch. Our population is primarily Hispanic and English Language Learners. We work hard to provide the meaningful learning experiences that our students need.
My Project
Art encourages us to slow down, look closely, and reflect on what we see. When we accept this invitation, we are rewarded with new thoughts and perspectives. The writing activity pockets and prompt box will provide rich material for writing. For many students, especially my English Language Learners, drawings are more immediately accessible than text and may provide a valuable link to engaging them more thoughtfully, critically, and creatively during the process of writing. Work on Writing is a huge part of our daily schedule. During this station, my students express themselves through their drawings and writing. Writing provides an opportunity for "Empowering Students Through Art"!
Please help put this practice of expressing themselves through the art of drawing and writing in our third grade classroom!
Students often connect with art on an emotional level. When they are given an opportunity to express through art, there exists a powerful motivation for capturing and expressing ideas through meaningful and articulate writing.
