Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I had a student once tell me that school is a place for him to take care of himself - to learn, and not have to worry about feeding and babysitting his siblings while his mother is away at work.

Like him, many students see school as a place to be a kid - to grow up and become who they are.

Many students coming into my class are from high poverty homes and have experienced severe trauma in their lives. However, every time they walk through my doors - they inspire me. As a part of a growing dual language program, my students navigate between two languages each day and just continue to amaze me.

My Project

Art has been something all of my students have always looked forward to throughout my years of teaching. Knowing that I was an art major before becoming a teacher, they always ask, "When will we do our next art project?" Yet, with pacing and curricula demands, it has been a struggle to consistently make time to incorporate it. This year, I will be dedicating time (almost daily) to bring the power of art into their lives.

Art has the ability to transform lives - and by providing sketchbooks to all students, I hope to bring art to them everyday.

These sketchbooks will help students to stay organized and focused inside our daily routines, as well as provide them an outlet to explore themselves more deeply. The sketchbooks will be used in 3 different ways, each with a different purpose in mind.

Firstly, they will be used to organize, explore, and practice the elements of art - color, space, value, line, shape, form, and texture. This is in alignment with Common Core State Standards and will prepare them to be able to analyze different art forms.

They will also be used to explore different mediums - ie charcoal, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, etc. This will allow students to express themselves in a variety of ways as they navigate exploration into each of their identities. Exploring different mediums also provides students with multiple opportunities to strengthen their self-confidence, resilience, and individual mindsets through risk-taking.

In addition, the sketchbooks will be used to connect what we are learning in art (above) to other content areas such as math and literacy. This will help to pave a sense of wonder and curiosity, as well as make content more meaningful to each student.
