Our small school is located in New York. We are a small school housed within a campus of many small schools. As we service students primarily from the surrounding neighborhood, our students represent a multiculturally diverse and disadvantaged urban population.
Many of our students are recent immigrants to the United States and therefore they face an up-hill struggle not only to learn the subject matter, but also to acclimate to a new culture and language. We also have a very large Special Needs population that has difficulty with the complex concepts associated with science.
Art and science are a natural pairing of disciplines. Both call upon students' ability to make observations, and create models and drawings to represent the world around them. My proposal is to provide students with art supplies that will enrich and enhance the learning process and improve retention of fundamental concepts. Using art adds a hands-on element to the learning process that Second Language Learners and Special Needs students find extremely useful. Art is also a way for students to demonstrate what they have learned and, more important, what they have not learned. Armed with this knowledge, I can better serve my students and help them understand science concepts in greater depth. This should help them score better on tests and, ultimately, the New York State Regents in Living Environment. Regents' test scores are one of the criteria used by colleges for acceptance and placement. My goal is to have students placed at the colleges of their choice.
Please help me help those most in need. Your act of kindness and generosity will have a long-lasting impact on our students. Thank you for your generosity.
