The Art Of Rhetoric (Why Is Everything We Read So Boring?)

My students need a LCD projector.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students constantly complain, "Ms. B, why is everything rhetorical so boring?" I teach an 11th grade Introduction to Rhetoric course that is modeled off of an AP Language and Composition syllabus. For my language learners, Special Education students, and nerdiest of nerds, the course itself makes them feel special; they're learning college level material because I trust that they can handle it. Ours is a writing high school; anything that can help their writing improve will give these students the best chance for success.

As thrilled as I am that my students can correctly use "rhetorical" in a sentence, and that their daily conversations are now sprinkled with, "Don't use pathos on me!", "That was an allusion!", or "How ironic!", I want them to see that the language of rhetoric can be found in everything: television commercials, famous speeches, documentary films, Jon Stewart's Daily Show, and the presidential speeches and debates.

So here's my solution. Students constantly tease me about my lack of technological savvy. But one day, I had a student help me download President Reagan and President Bush's speeches for the Challenger and Columbia catastrophes. They were riveted. To see examples of ethos, logos, pathos, allusion, posture, and formal language on screen made sense to them. If I could continually support their writing and reading through another sense, viewing, I think they would be unstoppable argumentative forces.

Your help will ensure that my students, future voters, doctors, lawyers, writers, journalists, teachers, and parents, will have every opportunity to be familiar with the world around them, the allusions behind big discussions, and the way language can both inspire and manipulate.
