Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is an inner city, Title I school in Los Angeles. My students are very eager to learn and have their eyes on going to college, even though most of their parents are not college educated, and in some cases, may not even be formally educated. They are just developing an awareness of themselves and the world, and these next couple of years are key for them to grow into confident and resilient learners.
The sixth-grade experience is so formative for students that it is crucial that they have positive and enriching experiences to nurture their passion for education.
Math and science are often the gatekeepers for many of the lucrative careers of these times, so it is paramount that they have the resources and quality instruction to give them access to the content and future success.
My Project
My students need opportunities to open delve into the world around them in creative and engaging ways. A true scientist develops a keen eye, and sketching and drawing is the perfect way to invite students to notice the unnoticed details of the world around them.
Detailed drawing opens the eyes and the mind through art and science.
It allows students to take the time to observe deeply, and in so doing, increasing their curiosity and sparks questions. These questions will be the seeds of authentic scientific inquiry.
In our science unit, students will explore the scientific method while keep a sense journal. The intent of this journal is for students to not only increase their capacity for empirical observation, but also to understand the limits of their human perception, as well as develop deep appreciation for the natural world around them. The specialized drawing pencils and gray paper stumps will allow students to begin their journey.
