Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is a place were the students can come to express themselves and maybe get a little goofy. I encourage the students to talk about their ideas with peers and to have an opinion. The students like to have fun and do different projects that are new and exciting.
My kids are energetic, thoughtful, and constantly ready to try new things.
The students like ideas and art work that is different from many of the things that they do or have seen in the past. They love to share there opinion about different art work. We as a class get a little goofy and silly while doing art but when it comes down to it they do a great job when inspired. (Crazier or funnier the idea the more inspired they are)
My Project
All the 5th grade classes will be able to use these materials explore the art of Gyotaku. The art was first used as a form of recording by fisherman. Later it became an art form that is still practiced today. Students will not only learn about the history of the art form but they will also learn how to create a fish print. Learning how to create a good fish print is not an easy task it takes patients and the ability to try different things. The students will need to experiment with the materials to figure out all the variables of Gyotaku: Amount of paint, is there to much? Not enough? How to rub the fish so that you get the most detail? How much paint to wipe off? How long to rub the fish? All of these things will effect how the print turns out. The students are captivated by the process and the idea which keeps them motivated to figure it out. With these materials the 5th grade classes we have now and the 5th grade classes to come will have a chance to learn this different art form.
I am a strong believer in learning about the world around us so that we can understand it.
The world today is getting smaller as technology grows and without an understanding for things that are different we cannot grow as a nation or as a world. As a teacher it is my job to help the student learn how to open up the world and look at it. I believe that this project will help the students look at another culture and become interested in its customs and ideas.
