Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Kindergarten at a Title I school. The majority of our students receive free or reduced rate lunch and come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. A high percentage of the students in my class are ESOL as well as some students with special needs.
My students come from diverse backgrounds and I love to foster their uniqueness.
They all bring something special to our classroom. They have limited resources at home, and my goal is to provide them the resources needed to succeed.
My Project
I teach Kindergarten where literacy is the key to my students' reading success. I teach in an area where displaced students due to Hurricane Maria are migrating to. These students are English language learners and they need visuals to be able to understand the strategies for reading being taught. We as teachers need to cater to these students to help them break down the language barriers they face. I plan to implement digital storytelling using the tablets with their protective cases and screen protectors. There is an array of free applications I can use. My goal is to combine animation, music and voice to help my students bring the story to life. The applications allow for my students to create animation based on their writing, they can type in their story line and add their voice to tell their story. The voice aspect will be monumental in improving their reading skills such as comprehension and fluency. This technology will make the process of digital storytelling interactive and creative. The use of visuals and technology will appeal to my displaced students and improve their language skills.
Some young readers and writers struggle with traditional literacy, using digital storytelling engages students and encourages them to utilize different kinds of literacy to enhance their understanding of the reading process.
Donations to our project will make a positive impact in our classroom and in the lives of the students that have endured loss.
