Students in our small Northern Wisconsin town are lucky to go to school in such a beautiful setting. Each of our elementary schools has ample space outdoors for students to explore and play. We have hundreds of lakes and several rivers in our county.
In countless ways, this landscape contributes to the Northwoods culture and lifestyle our students are most familiar with.
Though we live in a small town, our students do have access to art and logging museums, local authors, a very community-active public radio station, and a community college that sponsors national art shows and musical/theater talent throughout the year.
Many families in our community have settled in this area for generations. Students' family history, stories, and experiences are very much tied to Northern Wisconsin. Though the population struggles socio-economically, our students' ties to heritage and rich local culture are strong and ready to be documented through art!
My Project
Students feel they belong at school when they see their artwork displayed throughout the building.
The supplies for this project focus on establishing a creative and respectful learning community.
Timers and sketch boards will enable students to work independently beyond the confines of the art room. Following Responsive Classroom techniques, I will use the chimes to bring focus and attention back to the whole group. The lanterns are for a beginning of the year project that will capture each class' unique identity. We will use the embroidery hoops for a weaving project that will be on display in the school entryway. All of these supplies will help our school become a place where students feel valued and respected.
