Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is lacking art materials. We don't have many supplies that go beyond paper and pencils. I want my students to be able to explore the different subjects with a variety of mediums. One can only do so much with construction paper and glue. Please help open the door to artistic exploration.
My classroom is filled with high energy five-year-olds.
They are a lively bunch and they love variety. When they are doing an activity that incorporates an art activity, they start out quiet. As the project progresses, they start to get louder and louder. They notice what their neighbor is doing and they want that person to help them do something similar. They start asking how to spell words, so that they can label the parts of their picture. The level of happiness in the room rises.
My Project
I am requesting a lot of art materials. Some are to be used with play dough. Every year I have a few students who do not have strong hand muscles. This hinders their ability to write well because their fine motor skills are lacking. The play dough helps to strengthen their hands. I am also requesting painting materials. The children love to paint and it is a medium that they do not frequently get to do. This activity also helps to strengthen their fine motor skills and it improves their vocabularies. When the children paint there is always a lot of conversation. This is important because frequently the children are asked to be quiet throughout the day and they need time for self expression and conversation. Later in the school year I will include painting into our writing center. Once the children's writing skills develop to a higher level of independent work, they can paint and then write about their painting. I have also requested a few items that will just make things fancy.
Children need to have a way to express themselves through art.
If they don't have a variety of supplies and tools, their creativity can be limited. It is amazing how a bag of colorful feathers can make everyone happy and laughing. Something as simple as a feather can make a peacock dashing in a way that coloring with a crayon can not. I want to be able to give the children the supplies that they need in order to be joyful while they work.
