I teach first grade in a title one school in Brooklyn. In our classroom the children write everyday. When a piece of writing is done the children often choose to publish it. This involves painting illustrations, binding a cover, creating collages or illustrating with other art mediums. The children are very mindful of which art material would best support their story. I love the creativity and the deliberate decisions the children make. Their books are rich in color and their pictures often tell what they are not yet able to express as writers. In so far that my students are second language learners art is a medium that carries much of the meaning and details of their stories for my newest language learners. I would like to create an art publishing center. I have many art materials and would like to incorporate them into our writing center. I would like to set up various art materials in a area that would allow children to choose materials freely. As I confer with other writers I would love to provide a way for students to help themselves. My young authors choose ideas, draft and revise. Now I would like to give them an opportunity to create covers and bind their books with the same Independence and choice. I would like a premium art cart from classroom direct to house all the supplies needed to illustrate and bind their stories with ease. Please help us bring art into our writing.
