My Students
I work in a small, fully inclusive charter school, where almost 90% of the students receive free and reduced-price lunch. I work with students who are labeled in many ways: ELL, LD, ID, BIP, IEP, SLP, apraxic, autistic, ADD, ADHD, ODD, and the list goes on. I'm working to help students remove their labels and find their feet, as well as their voices.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds, but one thing they have in common is their thirst for creative learning opportunities.
My Project
My students have been studying the lifecycle of different insects and creating student-led podcasts to share their knowledge though technology. We are raising ladybugs, butterflies, and roly-polies so far.
The ants go marching one by one...
These ant farms, insect literature, insect eyeglasses, insect paperweights, picnic props, and fake bugs would help my students continue with creating innovative podcasts to demonstrate their mastery while investigating, up close and personal, the amazing creations and architecture of the ant.
Our classroom has become a place where students can explore living specimens as their life cycle unfolds. We have had the opportunity to observe, first hand, the metamorphosis of the butterfly and the complete change of the ladybug. Roly-polies have been great but we are excited to give our full attention to an everyday insect...a picnic pest...the amazing ant.
