The Amazing Bumble Bee Art Bicycle Parade Float Project!

My students need a 3 wheeled cargo bicycle that we can customize and turn into a big bumble bee parade float using a variety of recycled and scrap materials.

My Students

I work with groups of 2nd - 8th grade students who are exceptionally talented in the visual arts. My school is located in an extremely high-need community and many of my students come from a background of extreme urban poverty in Southeast Louisiana.

The Talented Arts program is one of the bright spots in my students' lives.

My program is designed to provide these exceptional children with an opportunity to develop their natural creative skills and talents while exploring the connections between art and other core subjects. The time my students spend with me working on hands-on art projects is one of the rare chances they are given to truly succeed, be appreciated and respected, and be part of a team. The success that they experience working on exciting "outside the box" creative projects in my classroom has the potential to ripple through the rest of their lives.

My Project

Thanks to the support we have already received on Donors Choose, we are working on a variety of amazing art projects this year that will all culminate in an incredible exhibition and performance that brings it all together. We are building homemade musical instruments, filming stop motion animation movies, creating a live sock puppet extravaganza, and building giant parade puppets. I plan to have the kids perform their live puppet shows for an audience of their teachers, parents, and peers and present their short films during the intermission. At the end of the show we will parade around the school with our giant puppets. Here is where the Bumble Bee Art Bicycle comes in... The mascot for our school is the Bumble Bee. I plan to have my students transform a 3-wheeled cargo trike into an art bike parade float. We will decorate the bicycle and turn it into a giant bee and use it to lead the parade!!!

I am working on a big, ambitious, multi-disciplinary project with my students.

This Bumble Bee Art Bike Parade Float is the last critical piece to the puzzle and will help bring everything together. The kids are super-excited about everything we are working on and these big out-of-the-box projects have shown them how much they are capable of and given them a taste of success and huge boosts in confidence. Your generosity is helping to change their lives in real ways! Thanks!
