"We must aspire to inspire before we expire." This quote from one of my students hangs on my board. It speaks to the drive my students have to make a positive difference in the lives of others by focusing on solving authentic, real-world world problems.
My students are ready to tackle tough issues in order to improve the lives of people in their community.
They are ready and willing to do research on matters of importance from politics to climate change. They are able to work collaboratively to find solutions, and can share the message with the public with poise and professionalism. They are risk-takers, willing to try out new ideas, even if those ideas sometimes fail.
My students care. They care about the environment, and want to take steps to ensure a greener future for themselves, their families and future generations. They care about one another--cheering for successes and helping with struggles. They care about education, and know that it is the key to their future success.
My Project
Most people know that outdoor air pollution is bad for their health, but indoor air pollution can also have significant, harmful effects. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) studies of human exposure show that indoor levels of air pollutants are often two to five times higher than outdoor levels, and in some cases, 100 times higher. Since students spend seven or eight hours a day inside the school building, it's important that the air they breathe is as pollutant free as possible.
Collecting data with this air quality monitor will allow my students to monitor the air quality in their school on a daily basis—and it will also give them opportunities to practice the STEM skills that are so highly prized in today's workforce marketplace.
The air quality monitor will be used to collect data from the students’ school environment. Based on that data, students will design solutions to improve the quality of the air, implement those solutions, and collect data a second time to see if their designs made a difference. With careers in STEM fields showing continuous growth, there is a critical need for classroom STEM experiences like these.
Better health, stronger minds. I hope to give my students a chance to breathe easier--for their health and their futures!
