This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach a diverse population of students with a myriad of social, emotional, learning, and behavioral needs. My students are a mixture of high functioning, average, and low-level readers, and many of my students struggle with ACEs. However, they will benefit from reading the novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie.
As an introduction to our first unit, Native American and Puritan Literature, I want my students to have an opportunity to connect the modern themes of the text to their lives and understand that the humanity of the past is not that far removed from "us".
My students have a great sense of humor, they are compassionate and caring individuals who will truly benefit from this emotion-evoking learning experience.
My Project
My students will have the opportunity to relate to a text that challenges societal ideologies about Native American history/literature as well as their own preconceived notions.
As an introduction to our first unit, Native American and Puritan Literature, I want my students to have an opportunity to connect the modern themes of the text to their lives and understand that the humanity of the past is not that far removed from "us".
My students will be engaged in the reading by making connections and sharing those connections in paired and group discussions, annotating passages and writing detailed summaries to demonstrate their comprehension and ability to relate to the text.
