Can reading failure be predicted?
According to research done by the National Institute of Health, it can.
How?!
By evaluating the strength of a student’s phonemic awareness skills....
Learning the Alphabet has been a challenge for my Kindergarten students who receive phonemic awareness intervention in small, separate group settings everyday with me.
My students, who come from low socioeconomic backgrounds in urban NY, struggle with memory challenges, learning disabilities and language impairments both expressively and receptively. This makes learning on a day to day basis feel very laborious and exhausting.
My K students need fun and engaging activities to support their developmental learning. I feel that this can be done by allowing them time to play with and manipulate letters, which will lead them to eventually understand them better.
My Project
Kindergarten and the primary years should be full of discovery, mastery, and excitement. Learning really can be fun...unless you have a learning disability and need lots of repetition, controlled practice and more opportunities to engage in activities than the school day allows.
For this project I would like to request 20 Alphabet game center activities that are fun and engaging for my students as they continue to work towards mastery of the Alphabet and eventually move towards understanding the correspondence between letters and sounds in reading and writing. By engaging in the requested games and activities, students will gain self confidence and feel successful both in and out of their classrooms. Providing my Kindergarten students with engaging and meaningful opportunities now will demonstrate positive effects in their reading and writing experiences in the future.
I would like to provide my students with more opportunities to engage with the Alphabet through play and structured activities.
My students already receive intervention because of academic challenges that have been identified. Despite these challenges, my students love school and want to learn all they can while they are here. It is my life goal to foster my student's love of learning despite these challenges and help them to feel as successful as possible.
