Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located in a low-income/high poverty neighborhood. I teach in a school where the student population is very diverse. I have some students whose first language is not English and students that have special needs. We are a full inclusion school so embracing all our unique differences is something our school community works hard to facilitate. Some of our families have just arrived in the country. In many instances, my students, and their families, are trying to get settled in a new country and acclimated to a different culture.
My students have a hard time focusing on lessons.
For some of them, it is very difficult for them to get their bodies calm enough to focus on classroom activities.
When it comes to teaching my students, I want to engage and enrich their learning experiences as much as possible. I want my students to have experiences that are enriching on many different levels. I want them to have every opportunity to access learning across academic areas and settings.
My Project
I teach Kindergartners who are at the very beginning of their journey as scholars. I have a very big job ahead of me each year. I need to form a solid foundation across all subjects for my students. As I work on building a strong literacy foundation, we work on letter identification, letter sounds, writing letters, words, sentences and stories.
Students being able to express themselves in written form is a goal this year.
Having these various requested writing journals will help to support my students at their individual stages of writing development. In the past, I had to photocopy writing paper and staple together journals and they would rip, become lost and simply fall apart. With these bound journals, I think it will help to support the students' writing. I can focus on instruction instead of up keeping handmade journals. Also, with these journals handling every day wear and tear, the students will be able to independently access and use them. The journals will have a positive impact on the students' writing development.
