Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are fabulous! They range in age from 7-12 years old. Some are energetic, others are quiet, but they all look forward to art class. In my class the students get to relax and show what they have learned through drawings/paintings.
The most significant growth is seen in the ESOL population that can demonstrate their learning in the universal language of art.
Most of my students are newly arrived to the United States. Their families are too worried about making ends meet; they cannot, nor would I ask them, to buy art materials instead of concentrating on more important needs.
My Project
My students will be looking at the parts of a plant covered in their science pacing guides under microscopes! This is a neat project! My students have never used a microscope nor do they know what or why they are used. Using the microscopes will allow them to see up close what plants really look like on the inside. This project gives me the chance to integrate art into science and math.
Elementary aged students rarely get the chance to use real scientific tools such as a microscope; with the help of the microscope they will get an amazing opportunity to draw and color the inside of plants.
This is a new innovative push across our school district to incorporate art into the sciences. The idea is to plant hardy veggies in the school garden and then use these same plants to study the structures inside plants that help them grow.
Students will be given time to go outside to the school garden, plant seedlings, and watch them grow. In a few weeks they will then be given cuttings of the plant parts which they will then analyze under the microscope and draw in detail.
This will create excitement and wonder as well as a new perspective on the needs of plants.
