My students attend a public school in Queens, New York. Many are new immigrants. They come from many different countries including China, Korea, Nepal, Pakistan, India, Egypt and Columbia. The class is a true melting pot and we love to share about our different cultures.
My students do not have access to books, supplies and manipulatives needed to learn, due to both monetary issues and the impact of Covid-19 on their families.
Many live in small apartments with siblings, parents, grandparents and other relatives. They are trying to do the best they can with what they have. They want to participate and learn, but due to coronavirus, students in class must be socially distanced and cannot share materials. Many do not have access to materials at home.
I wish that you could experience my students' thirst for learning firsthand. They are so excited as they progress in all areas, but are especially excited when using materials for hands on learning experiences..
My Project
The majority of my first graders are learning in a classroom for the first time. They have anxiety about many aspects of their lives, from learning to making friends to getting help with homework after the school day ends.
The books and materials that I am requesting will help my students learn to deal with their anxiety and other social emotional issues.
They will get to create their own calming bottles in addition to the sensory toys that will be added to the calming center. Hopefully, the books, fidget toys and other materials will help them gain social and emotional strength to understand and conquer their anxiety.
