This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
WHAT COMES OUT OF THE EARTH, GOES BACK INTO THE EARTH! What a great way to teach our children not to waste our resources. Children need to know that they too can make a difference on our planet; regardless of their age. We can make this happen by using the gardening tools to maintain an on going compost pile and using the dirt to make vegetable gardens. Students than reap the benefits by eating their grown produce.
We need the proper tools to garden so that the students can participate in the everyday maintenance of owning a garden.
I am trying to teach my students to compost and all the benefits that it can offer. I teach 4th grade. Last year we had a fall and a spring garden, using the compost we had made. The students grew radishes, cabbage, onions, tomatoes, and much more! They ate all of it and loved it! Do you know why? Because they had ownership; they took pride in what they grew. They ate things they normally would NEVER eat and they learned to like veggies they thought they would hate. Four children went home last year and built they own gardens full of veggies. The lessons they learned at school were extended and hopefully they will encourage others to do the same.
We can't expect children to "Be the change you want to see in the world" if we don't help them get there!
