Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever lived or worked in a place where you could not find tape, scissors, a sharpener, functional glue, or the like? These are the challenges of my classroom. I wish to effectively engage my students in learning activities, but lack functioning resources to do so.
My students reside in a tiny rural farming community in California.
Language abilities vary depending on each student's background, but for many of them English is their second language. My students are sweet, energetic, proactive learners, that work with limited resources and access. My students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and receive free-and-reduced lunch. The school community is rich in culture, and is attempting to provide the best education for the students in our rural community. Our school environment is dilapidated, so financial resources are focused on improving infrastructure; however, this places a restraint on the consumable, everyday resources my students need to increase their academic opportunities.
My Project
My students need 22 sets of colored pencils, 120 pencils, 48 dry erase pens, 22 individual pencil sharpeners, 24 erasers, 22 sets of colored markers, 44 rulers, and 22 bottles of whiteout. Twenty-first century learning involves less teacher directed instruction and more student directed learning. However, students need appropriate tools in order to become responsible for their own learning. In any given daily lesson I attempt to involve students in learning that requires teacher modeling, guided practice, collaborative learning, and independent application. As a result, there is a lot of transitioning between learning settings. The materials that I am requesting come from a wish list made by my students; the materials will be organized into academic tool kits. The tool kits will help to improve students' transitioning between various activities and learning settings. Quicker transitions will result in more time dedicated to learning, and less time wasted in scrounging, distributing, sorting, and collecting materials before/during/after class. I am requesting materials that will aid those students that do not have the financial means to purchase resources.
Your donation will help establish a structural and educational component that will increase my effectiveness to teach, provide students with academic tools, and increase time for students to apply their learning.
As my favorite Chinese proverb states: "Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand." These resources will help me involve students in new and more effective learning experiences.
