At our school, students take dual-credit college courses when they demonstrate the academic skills and habits of mind needed to be successful. The students in my class are not ready yet because they struggle with coming to school (missing an average of 2 days/week), have failed multiple classes in the past/are credit deficient, and some have been involved with the juvenile justice system in the past.
As a result, students in this class are students who are not yet reading & writing at the level needed for college-level English classes and/or who have not yet demonstrated personal accountability, grit, or work habits needed to be successful in college.
With past classes, not going to college classes has felt like a punishment and led to pervasive disengagement by those already below grade level and at risk. I asked students for input on how I could increase their engagement and they asked for a voice in how they will develop the necessary skills, including independent research, critical thinking, teamwork, college-level reading, and argumentative writing.
My Project
For 6 years, our Yearbook Club has provided a high-quality, low-cost yearbook to our small student body. Because of the small size of our school, we essentially self-publish our yearbook due to the minimum order requirements that the larger, more-mainstream companies impose. This means that we do not have access to the software and equipment provided by these companies.
Help us improve the quality of our yearbook by funding upgrades to our equipment including backdrops, a light ring, SD cards as well as replacements for older equipment including new charging cables, batteries, and carrying cases.
In addition, we would like walkie talkies so that we can communicate as a staff when we are covering events, as there is minimal cell phone coverage in our school.
This year, our club's goal is to build a social media following on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and SnapChat to showcase our learning community's academics, events and accomplishments to our families and friends not only at our school, but in our regional school district and around the world, including in Syria, Hong Kong, and Puerto Rico. We would like to also build this social media presence to market our yearbook to local businesses in order to encourage them to advertise with us and bring the prices of our yearbook down to be affordable for all of our families.
As a magnet high school, our students choose to come to us from all over New London County. Using this new equipment, we will create a higher-quality photo and video yearbook and social media presence that we will also use to market our school to prospective students and families to show them how incredible of an experience and opportunity our school is !
