The #1 Question Of The Year Is

My students need non-fiction books desperately, for research projects and for pleasure reading!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The #1 question of the year is: "Mrs. Zimmerman, why do all of our teachers tell us to read non-fiction books, but they never have any in their libraries?" I had to think about that one for a minute, and the only answer I could come up with is, "They're too expensive! We can't afford them!"

I have a very colorful classroom with a rainbow of ethnic backgrounds and they are starving for non-fiction literature.

The students love to experience the world through these books, as many of them have never even traveled outside of the state. My students come from very low socio-economic homes; most of them do not own a single book! Their only opportunities to enrich themselves through literature are here at school. They are hard workers and jump at every opportunity to better themselves and discover the world around them. Receiving these books would affect them in a priceless way.

My Project

My students will be working on big research projects this year and need some resources! Students are only allowed to check out ONE non-fiction book at a time from our school library because we do not have enough to go around. Most of the books I have in my classroom library are at a lower reading level, or too out-dated; one even begins, "Will we ever walk on the moon?" published in 1962. We keep it around because it has other valuable information on our earth's atmosphere, but it often confuses the kids. Many of my students will not have the opportunity to travel abroad. Through these books, they can go anywhere their hearts desire: back in time, to the moon, to the jungles of East Africa or even to Antarctica! Please enrich the lives of our students by providing them with a wide variety of non-fiction books!

Discover!

Experience! Learn! Enjoy! These are the gifts you'll be giving to our most deserving students when you fund our project! Without your help, my students will not be able to complete research projects, nor will they enjoy the wonders of the world we live in! Non-fiction books ROCK!
