“Every artist was first an amateur.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
My students love music.
When my students come to the music room, they are given the chance to put aside any troubles they have and make beautiful music! They are great kids who wear their hearts on their sleeves.
These are elementary students, beginning their young lives. They still have the innocence of childhood and are learning how to navigate the school setting. In music, they are able to express themselves through singing, playing and creating. Our school is a high-poverty school. The current economy has made an impact on our community. We need the resources to offer all of the materials that will make a difference.
My Project
In our music classroom, we are always actively making music. We sing, play instruments, and dance. Making music has become more challenging during this pandemic. One of the mitigation efforts that our elementary school has adopted is to put the students in pods of 8-12 students. The pods do not interact during the school day. When they come to music, I sanitize any supply or instrument that is touched by more than one pod. The large barred instruments are too complex to sanitize between each class.
So that they still get the opportunity to play and make music with them, I have assigned 2 or 3 instruments to each pod.
This means that I am putting instruments away and pulling out new ones constantly during the day. One of the largest bass xylophones does not have wheels. This makes it very heavy and cumbersome to move. By putting this instrument on a stand, it will make another instrument available for the students to play. The more instruments we have to play, the more opportunities the students receive to make music.
