Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title 1 school, where many students come from economically disadvantaged households. It is my goal to create a fun, engaging, and safe classroom where students feel welcome. The book, Charlotte's Web, will be used as a read aloud. Charlotte and Wilbur teach us about friendship, and compassion.
Through the study of this novel, students will learn the importance and value in working together and standing up for what is right.I will be using this class set to do a novel study, with rich literacy activities that will lead to a deeper and meaningful reading experience.
My Project
Providing students with their own copy of a novel in the classroom motivates them to think more deeply about the text. My students will be able to read these novels in the classroom year after year. Students will listen to the audio while reading, read in groups, with a partner and to themselves. Students will participate in comprehension activities to help develop reading strategies. They will learn to become more independent and persistent readers. They will participate in discussions, analyze characters, sequence story events and create a story map.
A huge benefit to novel study based reading instruction is the ability to really enhance the students’ critical thinking skills by diving deep with character and plot development.
Maybe the most beneficial reason of all to use novels in the classroom is to really tap into the empathy and awareness that books can bring to students. Charlotte's Web is a timeless novel, that teaches about friendship and sacrifice.
