Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine coming into school with English as your second language. You are unsure of how it will be, but a few weeks into it, you feel confident in school. You not only feel confident, but you are actually enjoying school. This is possible for all children, as long as they feel comfortable and are willing to take risks in their learning.
I teach a second grade ELD classroom in a high poverty school. Most of our students live in trailers and the rest live in apartments. They are not exposed to many things outside of their surroundings because a lot of parents don't have cars to take them to different places. An ELD classroom is a class where students speak English as their second language. It is my job, as an ELD teacher, to enhance their English by explicitly teaching the English language which includes a lot of vocabulary. There are vocabulary words that a native English speaker knows that my students don’t.
By receiving the PURE Digital Flip my students will be able to use their English in a more proactive way. Students will be able to perform plays, present research reports, or even just read a book. It will all be captured on video and the students will then be able to watch it and see how well their language is developing. There is also a second use that will come from receiving the Flip. I mentioned earlier that my students are not able to go to different places, therefore are unable to expand their vocabulary. I would be able to go out and film things for them and bring them back to the classroom. Even if they are not physically able to experience something, I can still bring it to them and they will experience it through film.
