This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students could easily be considered "underprivileged and underserved" yet they don't know it. They come to school, most days, wanting and needing to learn something new. However, they are in dire need of new ways to learn and new things to learn about so that their interest does not wane.
Currently, the students perform 1-2 years below grade level and their biggest barrier is reading.
The goal of this project is to increase reading test scores, fluency, and overall comprehension of both literature and informational text. Our vision is to mold our children into leaders, community advocates, and entrepreneurs.
My Project
This Read-Along Station (headphones, read-along books, and CD player) will be used in the classroom as a Center Activity to address multi-modal instruction and as an incentive for students who finish early or have earned free time. Students who are "read to" are more likely to be able "to read" and students who read "along" are more likely to read "alone". This is the premise of this project. Read-Along's increase the students' overall reading comprehension, word recognition, and fluency while encouraging confidence, stamina, and listening skills.
Read-Along's help give a story tone, mood and a human touch that both hesitant and struggling readers need to become courageous readers.
