Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a PreK-6th grade public elementary school. We are a tuition-free, public school, allowing students throughout Indy the ability to come through our doors. We also teach students through dual language, setting the stage for them to be bilingual and bi-literate throughout their lifetime.
My school is located in an urban area and qualifies as over 70% free and reduced-price lunch.
Our students come from a wide variety of cultural, socioeconomic, and linguistic backgrounds. The students at our school are smart, curious, and talented.
My Project
Students today have access more than ever before to news within their communities and the world around them. They hear news bites on the radio, Youtube, and social media. At their young ages, our students are attempting to make sense of adult-sized issues within their worlds. It is imperative for our students to grow up reading non-fiction and current events so that they can better understand how to become world-changers.
I am requesting Scholastic magazines that will help to immerse my students in current events.
These magazines will come out monthly, allowing my students to read about fresh topics and articles that affect their lives. In addition, students will learn how to dissect non-fiction articles and learn how to read text elements such as headlines, surveys, and graphs. They will learn how to form their own opinions and perspectives on current events and be able to spar with their peers on differences in opinion.
I am requesting three different magazine subscriptions due to the readers within my special needs classroom having reading levels between Grades 1 - 6. This will allow students who read at a variety of levels access to articles that they can read both independently and as a class. In addition, these magazines will be laminated so that they can be filed and re-read for use in writing workshop and for research topic projects.
