Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I teach music to elementary students in a high need, urban school district. Over 90% of our students are on free and reduced lunch. I teach every student in the school each week Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade. They love coming to music each week to participate in movement activities, instrument playing activities, singing and listening activities.

Unfortunately due to budget cuts, our school is not able to purchase new equipment for our music program. Right now our students are listening to music on an ancient CD player that sometimes does not function.

Exposing our students to new and different types of music is something I strive to do every day. Most students have never had the opportunity to listen to anything but popular music. I expose them to many types of music they would otherwise never hear. They love to listen and move to the music we play during class time. I would like for them to hear the music how it is meant to be heard. A new stereo system and MP3 player would help us all to grow and learn.

Your help will ensure that my students are able to broaden their minds and their horizons. Studies show overwhelmingly that studying the arts not only helps kids do better in school, it helps them become better citizens. Please help me bring music to their ears!
