My Students

My students are incredible! I have twenty-one, motivated, English language learners who are eager to learn.

My students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds with limited resources available.

We are a Title I funded, Performance Improvement school with a one hundred percent free lunch program. Many parents work two jobs and are struggling to support their families. Though their environments may not always be conducive to learning, they have an insatiable love of learning!

My Project

When teachers use culturally relevant texts, students have a better understanding of the books and, as a result, become more engaged in their reading. Their enjoyment and interest increase and they become motivated to read more. Students' background knowledge helps them make predictions about the story.

We will use these culturally relevant texts in our integrated language arts block.

They love seeing themselves in text and the discussions are pure and meaningful to all. It gives my students a voice and it acknowledges cultural heritages while bridging between home and school experiences. I would like to teach my students about Tet, the Japanese internment camps, and Hazel Ying Lee.

The play food will be used with our dim sum play food where students can role-play what they might find at an Asian restaurant. The Pokemon books are the kids' favorite and they are at a beginner level so even my intensive students can read them.
