My Students

My school is a 7th - 12th grade Jr/Sr Alternative Site. We are a Big Picture school, and this year are trying a student-centric online learning platform for our Sr. High students. I am new to this school, taking over for a librarian who had been ill for several years.

My students come from all over the city with only one thing in common: traditional school didn't work for them.

Our student body is overwhelmingly minority and impoverished, and all students are looking for a scholastic model that will allow them to succeed. Some of them had problems with behavior issues, some need a more flexible schedule to allow for work, some need more one-on-one attention from their teachers, and some have learning styles that just don't fit with a traditional program.

Regardless of where they have come from, or why they are here...they are ALL mine. All have the potential to reach for their dreams. What they need is the support and encouragement to believe in themselves and the tools to build their own ladders to the stars.

My Project

We all agree that reading is a foundation for future success and those who don't remember their history are doomed to repeat it. But often we are so rushed in the classroom trying to cover as much information as possible in the brief time we have...that reading to our students has become synonymous with work and history has become synonymous with yawn.

Our students need to see the personal side of history in order to relate to it.

They also need to remember that reading can be fun. The books on this list combine those two goals into one wild and exciting adventure for the students who will read them. From the Medieval courts of England and France to the Gold Rush to the trenches of the War to End All Wars...students will be drawn into reading in a way they have forgotten and into history in a way they've never known.
