Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students often ask me," How did you get so good at drawing?" My answer is simple, " Lots of practice!" I explain to my students that drawing is similar to math, reading, playing a sport, or a musical instrument- you have to practice if you want to improve.
I teach K-5 art at a rural Title 1 school.
Almost half of our student population is of Latino origin, and we also have high numbers of students that qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many of our students begin Kindergarten without being able to speak English. My students come to art once a week for 40 minutes. Coming from high poverty households, many of my students have little or no art experience outside of school. It is my responsibility to provide them with a well rounded visual art experience that exposes them to artists, art history and a variety of mediums.
My Project
I would like to provide my students with a sketchbook that they can draw in each week in art class and take home at the end of the year. At the beginning of art, students will enter the room and begin a warm up drawing activity each day. Their sketchbooks will also be used for planning and sketching ideas for their in class art projects. Some of their sketchbook activities will include activities like drawing a still life, drawing the person across from you, or drawing ten things that roll.
By increasing their drawing time, students will increase their confidence about their drawing skills and artwork in general.
The nature of a sketch is not to achieve perfection, but to quickly draw the feeling one gets from the object or assignment. This also encourages children to practice drawing without being concerned that their work is perfect.
